An advertising network monetises attention. It assembles a large, engaged audience, learns a great deal about what each person is interested in, and then auctions advertising space against that audience in real time. The larger and more engaged the audience, and the better the targeting, the more advertisers will pay for each impression.
Network effects arise when each new user makes the service better for everyone else. A social platform with more people on it is more useful to join and harder to leave, and it is more valuable to advertisers because the audience is larger. Once established at global scale, network effects are extremely difficult for a competitor to replicate.
A moat is what keeps competitors from eroding a company's returns. The widest moats in consumer technology are built on network effects, data scale, and the compounding advantage of better algorithms, which together make a platform the default place where attention and advertising meet.
EBIT margin measures operating efficiency: revenue minus the costs of running the business, before financing and tax. For a platform with near-zero cost to serve an extra advert, margins expand as revenue grows, unless a large investment cycle, such as depreciation from a capital build, works the other way.
Free cash flow is what remains after a business reinvests to keep running and growing. It is the number a DCF ultimately values. When a company is in a heavy investment phase, capital expenditure can push free cash flow negative for a time, even as the underlying earnings are strong, before it inflects.
Stock-based compensation is a real cost: it transfers ownership from existing shareholders to employees, diluting them even though no cash leaves the business. It is large at technology companies, so a disciplined valuation charges it in full rather than adding it back to flatter cash flow.
WACC blends the return equity holders require with the after-tax cost of debt, weighted by how much of each the business uses. It is the hurdle rate: cash flows are discounted at the WACC to today, and value is created only when returns exceed it.
