The seven-year-old explanation

Meta owns the apps billions of people use to talk to each other and share things: Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger. It is free to use, and Meta makes almost all of its money by showing people advertisements. The more people use the apps and the better Meta gets at showing the right advert to the right person, the more money it earns. Right now Meta is spending enormous sums building computers for artificial intelligence, which it hopes will make the adverts work even better and power new products. That spending is substantial today, which shrinks the cash it keeps for a few years, but the goal is much more cash later.

The investor explanation

The dominant global , monetising the Family of Apps, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger, which is about 99 percent of revenue, alongside the loss-making Reality Labs AR and VR segment. A founder-controlled company that proved its discipline in 2023, now making the largest capital bet in its history on AI.

The capital-allocation record

Mark Zuckerberg controls Meta through a dual-class structure, so the judgement on management is a judgement on him. The record cuts both ways. The 2023 Year of Efficiency, a roughly 20 percent headcount cut, restored margins convincingly and showed discipline. Against that, Reality Labs has absorbed enormous losses for years, and Meta is now committing to a colossal AI build, about $135B in FY26 rising to a $160B peak in FY28. The judgement to make

The capex distortion. Because the AI build is so large, unlevered is modelled negative through FY26 and FY27, about minus $19.8B then minus $6.3B, before inflecting to plus $26B in FY28 and plus $156B by FY30 as capex eases and depreciation is added back.
